Matala’s reputation has had a lasting effect and, even though the hippies are left in the past, the area has seen important development to accommodate the tourists who still arrive in droves. Many tavernas and beach bars line the far end of the sand, and a great number of sunbeds and umbrellas are laid out in the summer.
Malia Beach is located in the famous village of Malia, 36 km east of Heraklion Town. The area is fertile and famous for its windmills and local products. The beach that appears right in front of the settlement consists of fine white sand and crystal-clear, shallow waters. It is considered one of the island’s finest beaches.
Hersonissos Beach is located at Limenas Hersonissou, 24 kilometers east of Heraklion Town. It is a narrow, well-organised sandy beach, with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as cafes and restaurants on the promenade that lines the coast.
Gouves Beach is one of Heraklion’s most popular family destinations, owing to its proximity to Heraklion Town. Situated along the resort of Kato Gouves, it is an organized beach, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and even a local snack bar. On the rocky plateau at this small beach’s eastern end is a restaurant with a wonderful view of the open sea.

Peskesi also offers a great selection of local wines, focusing on sustainability and showcasing Cretan culture.
Covering over 20,000 square meters, the Minoan Palace of Knossos is the oldest and largest of all Minoan palatial structures. It was built of ashlar blocks, had many floors and was decorated with exceptionally beautiful frescoes.
Located in the city center, in the Lions (or Eleftheriou Venizelou) Square, the Morosini Fountain is one of the most distinctive monuments in Heraklion Town. In addition to the lions, the fountain is decorated with Venetian coats of arms, as well as with relief sculptures inspired by mythology and the sea world, including tritons, dolphins and nymphs.
The Malia Archaeological Site holds the third largest Minoan Palace found in Crete, after Knossos and Phaistos, and is located 35 kilometers east of Heraklion Town. This palace is believed to date between 1650 and 1450 BCE, although it was built on top of an older palace from 1900 to 1700 BCE that was destroyed by an earthquake.
CretAquarium is located in Gouves, just a few kilometers from Heraklion Town and the beach of Kokkini Hani. It is the largest aquarium in the Mediterranean.
